Taobao and Wasu Media Launch Digital Entertainment Products Platform, Digital Television Shopping to Broaden Consumer Choice

HANGZHOU, China, June 29, 2010 – Taobao, a subsidiary of Alibaba Group, and Wasu Media Internet Limited, a subsidiary of Wasu Digital Television Media Group, have jointly launched today a digital products platform and interactive digital television shopping to meet the growing needs of Chinese consumers for convenient and high quality shopping experiences. Taohua.com (www.taohua.com) will be China’s first comprehensive digital products platform offering single-stop sharing and purchase of video, e-books, music and other digital entertainment and educational products. For the first time in China, consumers will be able to shop from home on the Wasu Television Taobao Mall via interactive digital television shopping technology, which allows selection of goods and services using their TV.

Taohua.com and Wasu Television Taobao Mall will be operated by a strategic joint-venture formed by Taobao and Wasu Media. The joint-venture, named Wasu Taobao Digital Technology Limited, will bring together the two companies’ competitive advantages in online retail and digital media. This joint venture has been registered with capitalization of RMB 100 million.

“The powerful alliance between Taobao and Wasu will bring together resources in platform, content and users to give birth to an innovative new e-commerce and entertainment platform following the marriage of digital television and Internet,” said Fang Jiansheng, chairman of Wasu Digital Television Media Group. “Wasu Television Taobao Mall will be a model of innovation in being first in the world to combine e-commerce with the latest digital television technology to allow a small box to fulfill the online shopping dreams of hundreds of millions of people in the television audiences.”

Taohua.com will offer free and premium fee-based content that includes video, audio, e-books, educational materials and interactive entertainment. It is expected to offer a selection of 4,000 motion pictures and 20,000 popular television show episodes at launch. The platform will gradually introduce e-books, music and other digital products. Content providers for Taohua.com include Joy.com and Wasu. In the agreement with content providers, Taohua.com will have responsibility for distributing material provided by Wasu, Joy.com and others.

Wasu Television Taobao Mall will initially have 12 main product categories including household goods; consumer electronics and apparel. Hundreds of Taobao merchants have already signed up and more than 3,000 Taobao products are available for purchase at the click of a remote control.

Taobao Appoints Peng Ye as Head of Taobao Mall

HANGZHOU, China, October 12, 2010 – Taobao, China’s largest and most comprehensive online retail destination, has appointed Peng Ye as vice president with responsibility for operations of Taobao Mall, a dedicated B2C platform within Taobao featuring more than 30,000 local and global brands selling merchandise direct to Chinese consumers. Daniel Zhang, Taobao’s chief financial officer and interim head of Taobao Mall, will return to his full-time duties as CFO.

“With his extensive experience in sales, marketing and business operations, Peng Ye will help further drive the development of Taobao Mall's comprehensive e-commerce infrastructure, and build on the achievements of Daniel and his team that has made Taobao Mall the fastest growing segment on the entire platform,” said Jonathan Luk, CEO and president of Taobao.

Prior to joining Taobao, Ye was most recently chief operating officer at Baidu. He has served as country general manager for China at Apple and vice president of APAC at Motorola. He has also held various senior positions at Nortel Networks in China and Europe. Ye holds a doctorate in information and software engineering from the University of Ulster in England, and an EMBA degree from the China Europe International Business School. He will be based in Hangzhou, China.

Taobao to Help Small Businesses Grow More Effectively

China's largest consumer e-commerce platform to share access to its aggregate consumer transactions data

SHANGHAI, March 31, 2010 – Taobao, the largest online retail destination in China, is launching an initiative to help small businesses harness the power of data-mining to make sound strategic growth decisions by offering for the first time access to its database of aggregate consumer transaction records. Taobao hopes that this new data sharing service, the most extensive of any e-commerce platform in the world, will empower its small business customers to gain additional insight into important aspects of their businesses such as inventory, product design and offerings.

"We will be sharing raw aggregate data with customers and users as we believe they will find this information extremely valuable in terms of planning and business growth efforts," said Jonathan Lu, president and CEO of Taobao. "As a data-driven company, Taobao uses extensive data-mining to continuously improve the user experience on our platform. Today we want to share this valuable resource with everyone, particularly the small businesses on Taobao, to help people make smarter decisions in managing their businesses, which will also lead to greater job creation and economic growth."

"With better data, consumers will be able to shop more intelligently while manufacturers will be able to better customize product offerings to suit consumer needs," says Zeng Ming, chief strategy officer of Alibaba Group. "As part of our commitment to ushering in an e-commerce-driven new business paradigm founded in openness, transparency, sharing and responsibility, we believe data like this is meant to be shared."

Data access is guided by two key principles: data will only be shared in the aggregate and personally identifiable information will not be disclosed; and access will be offered in various tiers. For example, industry macro-data and the latest consumption trend data can be accessed free of charge while business data related to industry market conditions and consumer behavior research will be made available through a fee arrangement.

Through the Taobao Data Cube platform (http://data.taobao.com), a small business will be able to obtain direct insight such as macro-level industry trends, a market survey of its own brand, and a survey of consumer behavior. However, data of specific competitors will not be provided. In addition to obtaining data directly, small businesses can also contract directly with third-party research consultancies to commission data analysis that will help inform better business decisions such as merchandising, advertisement strategies and inventory.
